Little Background
The Greater Yei River Community of South Sudan unfolds its vibrant landscape, stretching majestically to the north where it meets Tore. To the south, the lush territories of Morobu and Kaya embrace the border with Uganda, while to the west, the community gracefully touches the edges of Lasu, adjoining the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To the east, it reaches the charming locales of Kupera, Wuji, and Koyoki, seamlessly merging with the expanse of Kajo Keji.
This enriched tapestry of life is woven together by the diverse inhabitants: the Kakuwa, Kaliko, Lugbara, Makaraka, Mundu, Avukaya, and Pojulu, who have journeyed along the Maridi Road. Together, they thrive in a harmonious coexistence, celebrating their unique cultures while fostering a sense of community that resonates with peace and unity.
In the 1990s, sons and daughters of the Greater Yei River Region of South Sudan started migrating to Canada due to civil war and displacement, with Canada providing resettlement, support programs, and humanitarian pathways. As more members from the region arrived in Canada, they connected, shared experiences, and supported each other through cultural events and discussion groups focusing on community preservation.
The Greater Yei River Community Association in Canada (TGYRCC) was officially incorporated as a nonprofit in Canada in 2022, receiving recognition from local authorities and community organizations.
